Tell us how to refine a demo to a mastered song.

I’m sure there are many ways to do this but the way I do it is to make a rough demo of a song and give it many hours of listens. From there you can start finding small details you want to be changed.

I think it`s also smart to give the demo to other musicians to get their view of what can improve before mastering the song.

Discuss the processing involved in creating a song.

First, you should have an idea of what you want to make. Often, I make the instrumental before using time on lyrics. This is because I feel it easier to make lyrics from the soundscape of the instrumental.

Like my last single ‘Darkness’ the instrumental had some vibes of sadness and despair. So, I always write lyrics in the end.

Right now, I make minimalistic music with only guitar and vocal, so the process is not that comprehensive, to be honest.

Elaborate on the themes of most of your songs.

Under this artist name (Andreas Grannes) I have put out four singles. All of them are about life experiences and how I felt at certain stages of my life.

In Darkness and State of Unconsciousness, my life was covered in darkness. I was lost and had almost given up on my life. Then you have songs like Heaven` s Gone and Fight that is a little bit more uplifting. In these songs; life was still unbearable but now there was a spark in me. I wanted to fight my way out of the mud.

So, all my tracks are very personal and some of them are hard for me to listen to. So, for me, my songs are personal, fragile, dark, and but also full of hope!

Tell us your greatest musical works up to date.

I think that must be my single “Darkness” as I have composed and produced it by myself. This is the first time I have done all the work for a project.

Normally I have been just the vocalist in several rock bands but It`s a good feeling to see something evolve when you make it yourself.

.

.

.

Tell us those behind your music process.

There are many people who have helped me evolve into the musician I am today. Musician Steinar Raunholm that got me into the music world and my first experience singing in a band.

Guitarist Ørjan Storesund in AIM who inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn.

Several musicians from the band The Grand Fool where I learned how to create good songs.

I also need to mention the Swedish multitalented and YouTuber “VIGI” who showed me a lot regarding creativity and songwriting.

.

.

.

Tell us how you are handling the promotion of your music.

This is new to me. Now I have promoted this single “Darkness” for a month and I’m really shocked over all the possibilities out there. The other singles I have released I have used minimal time promoting my songs, but this time I have used many hours on it.

Searching for the playlist to get on, get my song reviewed, creating my own playlist. The thing I have used most time on is to communicate with other people and creating contacts! I have found out this is extremely important. Also showing my face more on social media have been a little gamechanger!

.

.

.

Tell us your future goals and how you aim to accomplish.

My main goal is to create more music I’m satisfied with. Also, to evolve as a musician. I don’t need to be famous; I also have the goal of helping people with my music.

In the future I want to focus on mental health, something I find important.

.

.

.

Tell us what you think has changed in the music industry.

I feel the “internet monster” has changed the industry a lot. But the industry has also adapted very well. It`s no big secret that a musician is spending a lot more time now to promote his music than earlier. I think this is because it`s even harder now than earlier to get your voice heard in a massive ocean of artists.

.

.

.

Tell the greatest mistake to avoid while making a song.

“Hey, let’s make something sounding like Metallica” This. Don’t do this. Be original. Create something beautiful that nobody has heard before! It`s great to have influences, but don`t copy others!

.

.

.

Tell us how you boost your performance.

A good night’s sleep and focus on the job you are going to do. Show up prepared.

.

.

.

Explain the structure of the song.

Before the start of the song, there is a sample recording of wind. Then the guitar starts gently setting the vibe. I normally prefer that the guitar start by itself before the vocal sets in.

This song Darkness has a pretty mainstream structure with intro – verse – bridge – chorus /x2/ outro. The song is built up with nine different chords.

.

.

.

Discuss how the instruments come together for a song.

For this song, there is only guitar so there is no big process here.

.

.

.

State your musical skills.

My main skill is my vocal. I started my singing career around 12 years ago. I also play guitar, not an expert but more intermediate level. I have also practiced some piano, but I’m not sure if I will say I’m skilled enough to mention it here.

.

.

.

Tell if you consider acting in a movie.

When I was a child, I always dreamed of being a movie star. But now I don`t have any thoughts around it. I think I much rather want my music in a movie! That would be brilliant!

.

.

.

Tell us how you eliminate noise in your recordings.

I’m not an expert when it comes to recording, but I have picked up some here and there. I always use the most silent room in my apartment when recording, the bedroom. It also has great acoustics. I also try to record when my girlfriend is out of the apartment. When singing I try to find a good input balance.

Also, the distance from my mouth to the microphone is important. It’s also vital to find a microphone that is not too sensitive to reduce noise.

.

.

.

List the name of artists you cherish most.

John Frusciante: He is so creative and inspires me in many ways. From his comeback from rough periods in life. His emotion in his music. I really recommend checking out his acoustic solo albums.

Maynard James Keenan: The vocalist that has inspired me the most. His technique is outstanding and one of the greatest vocalists out there with Myles Kennedy.

Mew (The band) I remember the first time I listened to this Danish band. They are so original and all talented musicians. I recommend checking out the album “Frengers: Not quite friends but not quite strangers.”

.

.

.

Tell us how you get inspiration.

From almost everything. A person’s life story, to a walk in the woods. A rough day or a great day. Listening to music or reading a good book. Life give me inspiration.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the song.

“Darkness” is the story of an ordinary man who struggles with life. There is a dynamic between the stormy and frail vocal and the chill guitar floating in the background. The soundscape is mellow, minimalistic, and dark. But in the outro, you can feel a glimpse of hope and acceptance of the situation. For me, this track is hard to listen to. It takes me back to a rough time.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.

I was thinking about using an alias as my artist name. But I was thinking that since most of the songs in the near future are going to be about my life why not use my name. And this is just a single, not an album.
