Hailing from Oslo, via London, the ethereal soundscapers have drawn comparisons akin to the likes of Aurora, Lorde, Birdy and Cinematic Orchestra.

After releasing their debut album, ‘When World’s Collide‘ (2017) gaining the support of BBC Introducing, the band went on to generate more than 360,000 streams and land their music in a US feature film, directed by Domenica Scorsese – ‘Almost Paris.

Fast forward to 2020, the band are back with a reshuffled line-up and armed with an arsenal of their finely honed and modernized take on the Dream-Pop genre that has so successfully put them on the map.

Their new single ‘Layer You Up’ is due for release 15th May.

“Their music drifts you away and glazes listeners into a musical haze as though they are viewing the beauty of the northern lights without seeing them.”

–      Karma Bertelsen (Music Week)

“Every bit as atmospheric live, as on the record…absolutely blown away and thoroughly impressed! I’m very excited about what’s to come from this band.”

–      James Santer (BBC Introducing)

Fun Fact: The members of Circumnavigate have collectively played for some of London’s most respected artists; Jennifer Hudson, Louis Tomlinson, Sigala, Gabrielle Aplin, dodie, Maverick Sabre, Crystal Fighters and Kylie Minogue to name but a few.

Go into detail on why you decided to choose music as a career.

It was never really a difficult decision for any of us I don’t think! It just sort of happens; you grow up playing music…and one day you decide – this is what I want to do for the rest of my life! We were just lucky to find such a great bunch of friends along the way!

.

.

.

Brief us on the feedback you are getting from fans on your music.

One word that always crops up is “beautiful.” It’s the nicest compliment we can receive and we are so fortunate to hear it so often. When we generate new fans from live shows, festivals or even playlisting, they often approach us to say they can’t believe they’ve never heard of us before and we’re not a bigger name than we are. (We’re working on that though!)

.

.

.

Discuss the relevance of social networking to music.

It’s currently playing a huge role in 2020 with COVID-19 and social distancing; it’s been the only way to stay active and keep people engaged on what we’re up to!

.

.

.

Tell us how you record your song.

‘Layer You Up’ was actually all recorded in Sigrid’s bedroom! The drums, vocals, piano…the lot! Finneas and Billie Eilish make a point of explaining how their debut album was recorded entirely at their family home; we wanted to demonstrate our own abilities. It’s an exciting time for music production as so much can be done from the comfort of a home studio.

.

.

.

Tell us the story behind the song.

‘Layer You Up’ is inspired by seeing someone you love having a hard time and you offering to shield and protect them from whatever it is they are going through; offering layers of protection.

.

.

.

State your musical skills.

As a collective: Vocals, Production, Drums, Percussion, Keys, Guitar, Bass, Synths, Musical Direction, Show Programming, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Management, Booking Agent…I mean the list is endless as an indie artist; you have to do it all yourself!

We all play music for established artists in session capacity when not working together, so you could just say: professional. 🙂

.

.

.

Tell us how long it takes to complete a song from the start.

It really varies; sometimes we have written and produced a song in a week…others have taken months of back and fourth with ideas! It just depends on how the song develops.

.

.

.

Go into detail on how you develop your lyrics and melody.

Writing lyrics is always an emotional thing. We dive into subjects and stories and develop them kind of from the inside, even if the story or subject isn’t something we have experienced ourselves.

Sometimes we start with just a subject, a word or a few simple lines Sigrid wrote down when they kind of appeared and sometimes the lyrics come at the same time as the melody. Most of the time a melody just pops up. Most of the time the melody and lyrics just come at the same time.

Our writing sessions are kind of peaceful, thoughtful and filled with humour and so we usually find a good flow and it feels effortless.

Discuss music in full detail.

With our music, our aim is always to evoke emotion in people; we aim for the beautiful, the ethereal and dream-like state that takes you away from the moment you are in and attempts to immerse you in the song. As we write a lot with motion picture in mind, we envisage moving or emotional scenes and try to capture elements of that in the writing process.

.

.

.

State your five favourite genres of music with reasons.

Folk: Makes you happy!

Rock: I don’t think we’d have a rhythm section if it weren’t for this genre.

Pop: Everyone loves a good pop song!

Jazz: Where would we be without it?

Soundtrack: We love to create a soundscape, so it would be rude to not factor this genre in!

.

.

.

Discuss your rehearsal.

In the past, our rehearsals have been more for the technical aspects of our bigger live shows; programming, running changes, electronics etc. However, more recently we have gone back to basics and just focussed on the real live aspect and our talents as musicians, stripping it back a little.

.

.

.

State your favourite musical instruments.

I don’t think anyone can compete with a real string section.

.

.

.

Describe the chemistry between you and your fans during a live performance.

Emotional and connected; it feels like we are taking them on a journey and they are fully immersed in what soundscape we are creating. It’s not uncommon to see both tears and smiles. 🙂

.

.

.

Discuss your personality in full detail.

4 personalities in Circumnavigate; Sigrid is the fierce, but friendly one. Ross is the outgoing, chatty one. Charlie is the eccentric surfer dude and Josh is the chilled groover!

Share your memorable experiences with us.

The day we found out our music was getting placed in a US feature film was a very good day! I’m sure you can imagine the celebrations. Release days are always great days too! Performing at a festival in the North of Norway with 24hrs of daylight!

We all have individual stories that are interesting too…like the time I sat next to Marilyn Manson on a plane before playing the same festival in Lapland or playing a sold out Ryman in Nashville (Ross), supporting Coldplay on their stadium US tour (Charlie), featuring as the vocalist on Maverick Sabre’s ‘Let Me Go’ (Sigrid) or being recognized as an established songwriter and being booked for sessions (Josh).

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

Circumnavigate. In general terms it means to go around something; in our infancy as a band we used to skirt around a few genres including jazz, folk and pop, eventually settling on our current dream-pop sound.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

‘Layer You Up’ is inspired by seeing someone you love having a hard time and you offering to shield and protect them from whatever it is they are going through; Offering layers of protection.
