Tell us your names, country of birth and childhood experience.

My name is Clay Mackenzie, hence the name Claym. I was born in Hampshire in the UK to a Greek Cypriot mum and English dad – the first and only time I performed singing live (before I became Claym) was at 9 years old at a karaoke club in Fuerta Ventura – ‘rockstar’ by Nickelback.

.

.

.

Tell us your academic qualification.

I achieved 3 A levels before I began my music career. I now study Music Management B.A. (Hons) at West London University.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience and skills.

My music represents a dismissal of traditions: RnB and rap fused with pop and alternative, acting fused with singing, lyrics fused with melody – a new, unique and fresh sound coming from London UK.

The name ‘Claym’ is a double-entendre, it represents my name and my ‘go-get-it’ attitude to achieve goals, despite what people say or think.

The only person who knows your true talents is YOURSELF! SO CLAYM IT!

.

.

.

Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video or song.

The music video depicts a fictional narrative that is somewhat like my real-life experiences.

In the video, Claym gets kidnapped by 2 masked men who require an unknown service from him, but Claym escapes before the audience find out what they want. All is revealed in the next video!

Tell us how to run a record label based on your experience as an artist.

I’ve learned all you need to know about labels. You need to know people – have connections and interpersonal relationships throughout the industry. Get yourself some social confidence, and you’re halfway there…

.

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

I promote each song the way I feel will most benefit the type of song.

‘Ace of Hearts’ is a UK pop song, so I did a lot of radio coverage and radio interviews (Foundation, Maritime).

I have a medieval song releasing soon – I’ve promoted it to YouTubers who upload fantasy game tutorials and wish to feature it in their videos!

The song offers both mass and niche demographics an intriguing glimpse into the chaotic musical world of CLAYM – exciting stories, immersive melodies and a boiling pool of mixing emotions.

‘Ace of Hearts’ is CLAYM’s 4th ever single and 1st ever music video; it correlates with his USP of fusing the Pop, RnB, Trap and Alternative styles but it has a raw, urban originality to it which makes him a pioneer for breaking down barriers between the commercial and underground scene.

While the composition, the beat progression and the general ‘vibe’ signifies a level of simplicity and optimism which is easy to the ears, the dark, thought-provoking visuals and conversational wordplay juxtapose this commercial sound with a certain grittiness – this is the ‘Original Fusion’ – no limits, no rules, no copies. This is CLAYM.

In just 8 months of solid grind, CLAYM has progressed from a non-musical ‘nobody’ to a multi-faceted artist and commercial asset: he constructs lyrics and narratives which the biggest names in the charts couldn’t do, all the while performing with a smooth, clean UK sound and experimental vocal range.

‘Ace of Hearts’ demonstrates CLAYM’s endless potential as a creator, story-teller and businessman – his resilience to the disadvantages of being independent and inexperienced in such a competitive industry.

Explain the story behind the song.

The song explores the internal conflict we experience when in toxic relationships. Embedded within the song’s story are clever metaphors of a CARD GAME – suggesting life at this age is merely a game… May the best player win…

State the names of other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director.

CLAYM is independent – acting, singing, directing, writing done by ME. TVKVISUALS shot the video.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music business, your experience, and your future goal.

Been releasing music professionally for 10 months… my end goal is to leave a Claym legacy – create a new style and a new perspective of commercial urban music…

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

What makes me unique is my ability to fuse thought-provoking, clever wordplay with intoxicating melodies.

My ability to fuse genres and styles is extremely unique – the big names in the charts struggle to create sounds which have a balance of commercial BOP and underground GRIT – CLAYM can. With so little experience, too.

.

.

.

Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining to music.

My biggest strength is my writing ability, my ability to write songs in a conversational. story-telling manner.

Another strength is my public speaking and social ability to create good interviews.

My weakness is my overthinking of vocals in the studio – often studio sessions are unproductive as my mind is not in the ‘zone.’

List your five favourite songs including the artists.

Future – Codeine Crazy, The Weeknd – After Hours, Young Thug – Feel it, Juice WRLD and Halsey – Without me, Lana Del Rey – Gods and Monsters…

.

.

Tell us your position on “Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.

DIY artists are in a better position than ever, but you need the right support and knowledge.

DIY artists will only achieve if they have a budget, more importantly, they know what the budget is for. They need to know about accountancy, and how to take steps to secure themselves as an artist (PRS, Musicians Union, Copyright, etc.) – studio time and access to producers…as the market increases in size.

A label can be useful, but you must consider what you represent and are trying to achieve as an artist. If you are a pop artist who aspires to be the next Ed Sheeran, a label would work. If you’re an underground Grime DJ trying to come up in low key exclusive clubs with their own team of friends, maybe DIY is best.

.

Tell us other activities you are pursuing apart from music.

I work with disabled university students currently, helping write exams and notes for them.

I also do physical exercise – gym, free running, and squash now.

I am starting a business called CLAYM WORD which sells people cheap, suited-to-you – Press Releases and Biographies.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

The name Ace of Hearts is a metaphor – it reflects the running reference to a cards game in the song; however, it also suggests an idea of being the BEST – the ace is the highest card in the deck. The Ace of Hearts connotes that love, relationships, and pain is an underlying theme in the song (it often is!).

.

.

.

State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.

The next album release is ‘NOW IS THE ONLY REALITY’ – I have suffered from anxiety, paranoia and more specifically the ability to forget about the past and move on.

The name reflects that the past and future do not exist, and happiness lies in the present moment. It is there for everyone…
