Now, if JRR Tolkien had manufactured a pop star, he’d have probably come up with Avant pop songstress GEISTE.

 

Mixing electronic soundscape, grasping drumbeats and powerful lyrics, GEISTE belongs to her own dark pop world influenced by artists such as Grimes, Aurora, Lorde and early MØ.

 

 

 

Born in the south of France, GEISTE began writing stories and her own music at a young age.

 

She released a first EP as part of a trip-hop duo in 2014 before starting her solo career when moving to London the same year.

 

Quickly evolving from an acoustic act to a unique electronic live set GEISTE played her first set in December 2018 and, since then, she’s been attracting a lot of interest across the industry.

 

GEISTE hasn’t finished to surprise us and drag us into her intriguing and endearing universe as 2020 will see a lot of new music from the producer and storyteller.

 

She will be performing at Liverpool SoundCity Festival and will celebrate her debut EP Utopia at The Grace in London (promoted by DHP Family).

Go on at length on what it takes to write a song from the start to the end.

First, I need to sit and honestly it is the hardest part. Sitting at the studio. I have a home studio in my room in London, so all I need to write a song is sitting and a little bit of an idea/ inspiration.

 

Inspiration comes in many forms – it can be just a feeling/mood that day/a story or just an idea I had in mind.

 

At the beginning I just play around with sounds and melodies that come at the piano or vocally.

 

I write a lot in notebooks so usually, the starting points of my lyrics come from thoughts I had in the past and did not forget to write down.

 

As soon as I start I kinda go in flow mode and it works until I reach this point where it is too messy and I need to stop, take a break or sleep on it.

 

I work on the song on my own until I feel like this is as good as I can do.

 

I work with different producers and depending on the song I know who I want to finish it with.

 

Every producer usually leaves a little bit of themselves in the song they work on and it’s amazing to see a song develop and shape with someone else input on.

 

We usually talk about the meaning and sound and atmosphere I had in mind and work together in their studio before re-recording vocals properly.

 

They usually mix the song as well and that is the moment when I listen to the song too much until I can’t anymore.

 

We send it to get mastered… The song is finished. Although it never really reaches the finish state in my head. I work on it more to be able to play it live on my own and every time I play it, I have new ideas and make it sound different.

Elaborate on the gain and loss of being a musician/artist.

Creating, writing and playing music is something that I have been doing for quite a long time but never took it too seriously.

 

Between writing songs in my room and sharing them a lot has happened in the last year and it has been incredible but although brought along some darkness and knowing it is literally only the beginning is beautiful and scary at the same time.

 

Now, it didn’t bring me much more than personal satisfaction in the sense that I have the hope that maybe one day I could do it full time and professionally.

 

I am lucky to be performing it as well in front of people and this feeling is the best in the world – I have never felt happier than on stage dancing or locked away from the world in the studio.

 

There is a lot that goes with it – as I still have a full-time job and all the other moments when I am not at work is to work on music or promotion or at a show.

 

I have restrained a lot of the time I could spend going out or partying or just doing something else than that. I guess because now it is just me and my manager taking care of everything it gives us the control of everything but also, I end up spending a lot of time doing other things than writing music.

 

When you start sharing music with people a lot of stress comes along – of feeling like it is good enough – feeling like you are not productive enough – like I am not good enough. But I think it is just what it is.

 

In everything, there is good and bad and that feeling of stepping on a stage – seeing people reacting to something I created and just sitting and giving birth to a song I will be proud of is the strongest happiness moments I have ever felt.

Tell us how you connect people with your music.

I feel like the moment music connects the best with people is playing it live.

 

When I write a song, it is mine until I release it. Then, it is not mine anymore – I gave it away.

 

The only moment when I feel like the words resonate is when I play it live.

 

I put a lot of emotion into the words I write and the melodies – I talk about darker moments I had which I think most people feel too. That is what connects all of us: emotions.

Mention your greatest song up to date.

I think people really like ‘Ocean.’ It was my debut single. I really like it too.

 

But all my songs are my children you could not pick a favourite. I think I find them great for different reasons. There is one called “I just feel really empty inside all the time,” which I think is great because I am proud of the production, I did on it on my own.

 

I like “Utopia” and another song called “Twig” because it is the most honest, I have been with my lyrics. I don’t know – I could not tell you one.

Tell us what you hate most about the music business.

It’s all about data and money – music doesn’t really matter anymore. It’s a game you must play while hating it.

Discuss how you monitor your digital distribution and streaming.

My manager and I pay close attention to all the datasets we have via our distributor AWAL and platforms such as Spotify and Apple for artists.

 

It’s interesting to see the journey of each songs in the streaming world, how people from different countries react to it and how it comes all together. It’s great to have this insight to make decisions on our strategy.

State the obstacles that a new artist can face as a starter.

There are some sacrifices to make – it is hard work but paying back 1000 times. I think the main obstacle is fear. It comes in different forms – fear to fail, not be productive enough, fear of giving 200% of yourself into something that is so uncertain, fear of sharing pieces of yourself into everything you make, fear of being vulnerable, fear of people reactions to your art, fear of being yourself, fear of not being yourself enough…

 

I think the main thing is the people surrounding you. I am so lucky to have an incredible family, strong and creative people in London. It is a super lonely city and you can quickly end up in your head and doubting everything. Mastering resilience is the key and we can fail at it every day.

Tell us how you will tutor a new artist in the music business.

My advice would be to learn and be curious. You need to be aware of what’s going on both in the business and in your own scene.

 

There are a lot of resources online, and in each city there’s a community of artists and professionals you can reach out to.

 

Second, find someone that is willing to help you through this journey – it’s very important to have a team of people that support you and can share parts of this journey with you.

Explain how you record songs.

I record a demo of the song in my bedroom studio and then send it to other producers to finish it.

 

We re-record sometimes parts of the instrumental with “real” percussions, piano … in the studio. My microphone is ok but not the best, so we re-record the vocals and harmonies in the studio as well.

Discuss digital and analog recording.

Now for budget/convenience reasons; most of the instruments are digital as well as the recording process.

 

We mix digital and analog a lot when we go into the studio. For example (I am going to tell you a secret here) on ‘Anthems,’ during the breakdown part we recorded some tape recorder noises to give the lead the rawness and feeling of breaking apart – we hear on the record.

Tell us your opinion on adding effects to vocals.

I LOVE IT.

Tell us how you eradicate noise in your recording.

We keep it as the voices in our heads – it adds depth and mystery to the character. We add some extra noise on top and an organic atmosphere running all the digital parts in analog equipment (desk, tape machine…).

Describe the theme of your lyrics.

I talk a lot about my own fears. The main theme of this chapter is escaping reality to live into a world I created called UTOPIA. The lyrics are mostly about the reasons why I feel like I can’t live…

 

Ocean – not feeling like you are heard, your voice matters and disconnected from what matters to other people. Disappearing because people feel like they know what the best for you is and feel like screaming to feel like you exist.

 

Anthems – I talk about self-empowerment, being inspired by nature and owning your own powers and femininity or whichever gender you identify yourself.

 

Utopia – is the lead track of the EP- I explain the story and concept of the whole EP. It is mostly the reason why people and the whole world is hurting and end up hurting others.

 

Dither – Here I talk about self-love and surrendering to this feeling like letting go of the control you have on your own emotions and fears.

 

Most of my lyrics are about what I am facing and reasons for my anxiety attacks.

Tell us if you consider singing about politics or injustice rather than love stories.

I don’t sing love stories. Except when it is self-love and respect.

Discuss the registration of your songs with your Performing Rights Organization.

My manager takes care of all that admin part, registering the repertoire to PRS and PPL, and keep track of the repertoire and all the metadata attached to it. There’s a shared spreadsheet we have with all this information so that I can refer to it if needed.

Discuss how you distribute your music.

We plan well in advance our releases because in the end, it’s all about lead times when releasing music and we want to make sure to have everything in place.

 

I distribute my music through AWAL, and my manager is the one taking care of the upload of the song and monitoring its distribution.

 

Again: spreadsheet and shared folders where both my manager and I can keep track of all the metadata and assets of a song.

 

Also, as we know, often things don’t go as planned, so it’s always good to have some extra time in case things don’t go as expected.

Discuss how you cope with the crowd on the stage.

I used to not really care about the crowd – even like the adrenaline, it brought me before. I don’t know why but since the beginning of the year I felt scared before every show. I even had a panic attack at Omeara in February. The crowd became bigger it’s true. In the end – as soon as I step on stage the fear is gone. It’s like leaving your own body and becoming only the embodiment of the emotions of every song.

 

Since I fear – I dance more, I feel more and the emotions I give to the crowd are 1000 times stronger. I am not me anymore on stage.

Elaborate on the song.

Dither is a walk in the city – between buildings and streetlight. Those moments when you walk and think about life and how you behave – all the things that you do wrong.

 

As you walk, hope becomes stronger because you find solutions and what doesn’t work.

 

I was walking in Euston after breaking up with all the people that were toxic in my life. I wished to surrender softly to love – the love about yourself – giving yourself enough credit to love who you are and let yourself be loved as well.

Elaborate on your artist name and the title of the album.

I used to play acoustic gigs in London with no name. It took me a while to find this one.

 

I spent two weeks isolated in a shed in Glastonbury to record some demos I wrote – not talking to anyone but spiders and toads and eating only olive paste.  It was cool and opens your mind a lot to what is happening around you.

 

I met my mom the following week in Copenhagen and we were walking down a dark alley and at the end, there were neon lights – writing GEIST – in a very fragile font behind trees (the font name is HELLOGOODBYE – it’s a pretty cool font) and I thought it was representing me quite well – so as soon as we went back to the hotel I looked up on internet if any band or artist had that name and took it. Added an E and that’s the story.

 

UTOPIA – Concerning the EP – It is the name of the place I live in. And for the album – I won’t share just yet.

Originally French, GEISTE an electronic artist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer-songwriter and member of The Rattle Collective in London.

 

Her debut single Ocean received incredible support with a sold-out show in London and since then she’s been building her profile within the electronic music scene.

 

In May 2020 Geiste will be performing Liverpool SoundCity Festival and launch the EP at The Grace promoted by DHP Family.

 

For Dither she collaborated with V1TA Collective working with Fabio Senna, Simone Gallizio and Luciano Fenudi, producers and sound engineers who worked with the likes of Tommaso Colliva, Brian Eno, RAYE, Razorlight, Jorja Smith, Mosa Wild.
