Tell us how to refine a demo to a mastered song.

A demo is just the bare bones of a song, like a first draft. We have three demos on our Spotify right now which are the first three songs we ever wrote. They are completely different from how we play them live as they’ve evolved with us over time. If we were to record them again, they would be a lot more refined.

Discuss the processing involved in creating a song.

Songs for us usually start as one person’s idea. Maybe a bassline, a guitar hook or a drumbeat.

We typically jam around that one idea for a lengthy period, turning it into a 15-20-minute recording. We then go and pick out the bits that work best from that section and hone it down to the end product. Sometimes this can happen in a night, other times it takes a bit of time.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the themes of most of your songs.

Our songs follow the narrative of a few characters who feature throughout our releases. We typically write about what is affecting us at that moment. The world is bleak right now, so our songs tend to have quite dark references in them.

.

.

.

Tell us your greatest musical works up to date.

We think ‘Headlines’ is our best record out right now. We have a few more tracks coming in the next few months that will top that, but no one has heard them yet so they’re top secret.

.

.

.

Tell us those behind your music process.

Omar is the guitar and vocals; Dave is the bass and Jake is drums and backing vocals. For this release, Jonny from Bottle Rocket Recordings was our producer and he had a huge impact on our sound.

.

.

.

Tell us how you are handling the promotion of your music.

It’s quite organic. We usually start marketing the song on our own socials a few weeks before its release, then we try and get as much coverage as possible when it’s released.

The best form of promotion for us is when our mates push them because they genuinely like the song. We think that works better than a sponsored post.

.

.

.

Tell us your future goals and how you aim to accomplish.

We just want to get our name out there and have our songs on the radio. The only way to do that is to keep pushing, keep making music, and keep gigging as often as possible.

.

.

.

Tell us what you think has changed in the music industry.

Everything is a lot more temperamental these days. If you go quiet for a bit it’s easy to get lost in the noise of all the other bands, so you need to be consistently in people’s minds or people will move on to the next thing.

.

.

.

Tell the greatest mistake to avoid while making a song.

Making a song that sounds too similar to someone else’s. We thought we’d written one of our best songs ever last year. When we listened back to it, we realized it was basically a rip off of Weezer’s ‘Hash Pipe.’ Safe to say we scrapped that one.

.

.

.

Tell us how you boost your performance.

We like to get as much feedback as possible at the end of a show. Our friends are good at telling us what they thought was shit – which is nice.

.

.

.

Explain the structure of the song.

We really play off the ‘loud quite loud’ structure in our songwriting. We like intensity, so the structure of this song is built to hook people instantly, let them mellow out a bit and then have the song come crashing back around them.

.

.

.

Discuss how the instruments come together for a song.

It varies from song to song. Sometime Omar will have an idea written that we love and build upon, other times it comes from just messing around in rehearsals then suddenly something clicks.

.

.

.

State your musical skills.

We can all play a few different instruments. Dave and Omar both studied music at university so they can pick up most things and play them. Jake is a drummer first and can do a bit of guitar too so we’re doing some acoustic covers while we’re in quarantine.

.

.

.

Tell if you consider acting in a movie.

None of us can act but if someone wanted to put us in their movie then why not?

.

.

.

Tell us how you eliminate noise in your recordings

That’s all down to our producer Jonny from Bottle Rocket. We make the noise and he does damage control.

.

.

.

List the name of artists you cherish most

We all have very different musical tastes so it’s not a collective idea. We’ve been described as the bastard child of Bloc Party and Queens of the Stone Age… which we think is a good comparison.

.

.

.

Tell us how you get inspiration.

For the lyrical themes of the songs, it’s whatever is happening in our lives right now.

For the style of music, we’re really inspired by the underground post-punk movement which is really taking off in London right now.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the song.

A year ago when this song was first written, Love Island was everywhere, Boris Johnson was kicking up a fuss, the royal baby was all over the headlines and we were sick and tired of seeing the same vein of headlines overpowering the real stories – which is funny because it seems more relevant now than ever.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.

Our name is something that we wanted to stand out and make us easy to find and remember.

Pretty sure Lyena isn’t a word so you’re not going to Google us and get 10,000 other results. ‘Headlines’ just reflects what the song is about. Clickbait headlines.
